Following her introduction to this film, Dr. Selma Ciornai from the Department of Gestalt Therapy, Instituto Sedes Sapientiae in São Paulo, Brazil, invites us to watch a group art therapy workshop for post-graduate Gestalt art therapy students. Working with symbolic languages and personal interpretation in a cozy room with pillows, scarves and art supplies, Dr. Ciornai gently guides her students back into their childhood, to remember stories that filled the universe of their imagination.

Through relaxation and guided visualization, each student is asked to pick one story which feels especially meaningful, to recall as many details as they can about it-the storyteller, a character they identified with the most, and one scene that felt crucial then and now. As the participants are brought back into the present moment, Dr. Ciornai directs them to create two drawings representing their significant character and the scene of their choice. These magical and powerful images and stories are shared in the safe space of the room. While their impact and power are explored, new stories unfold, and links related to choices and present life are made.

This workshop session ends as childhood songs and a circle of laughter and intimacy fills the room while us, the viewers, are given the gift of witnessing how imagination, symbols, self-interpretations, creativity and gentle guidance, can help us grow.
