EFT Masterclass: Advanced Topics in Couples Counseling: 4-video series
Couples therapy is already challenging, but becomes even more so when addiction, sexual issues, pornography and grief enter the clinical frame. In this richly instructive four-volume series, EFT experts and trainers demonstrate how strengthening the bonds of attachment can heal relationship wounds in these complex cases.
Over time, couples with secure bonds of trust and attachment grow together. However, already insecure bonds become even more frayed and couples grow distant when complex issues like substance abuse, pornography addiction, sexual intimacy and grief enter the clinical frame. In these cases, clinicians can easily become mired in and distracted by these thorny issues. EFT, with its focus on attachment, is a proven and effective method that will guide you directly to the frayed bonds of attachment in the couples you work with so you can help them mend and grow.

By watching this talented team of EFT clinicians conduct four actual couples therapy sessions, you will learn how to directly address the pain and detachment fueling addiction, sexual disconnection and loss in the couples you work with. Your clinical competence and confidence with these couples will be deepened by watching this richly instructive and deeply moving set of clinical demonstrations. Treat yourself to a front row seat as these master clinicians demonstrate, narrate and teach you the powerful applications of key EFT principles and techniques with these challenging clients.

What therapists are saying…

“Highly recommended! An excellent resource for anyone interested in deepening their skills and continuing their professional growth, this series covers topics not thoroughly covered beyond content-level knowledge in training programs, but incredibly important in many relationships. Well-produced, with clear guidance on developing advanced-level skills that are often underemphasized in training, especially within a clinical context.”

—Keith Klostermann, PhD, AAMFT Approved Supervisor, Associate Professor, Medaille College
“An invaluable resource for anyone working with couples. These videos are a rare opportunity to experience clinicians with very different styles apply the same model of psychotherapy. To see how the same model can be brought to life from different angles was most valuable for me. I especially loved seeing how very different therapeutic styles are a great fit with the EFT-model, and that emotion can be worked with through several routes. Both Michael Barnett and Leanne Campbell help their clients get in touch with their vulnerabilities, but the way they go about it feels very different. Barnett shows us how the attachment cue and the cognitive appraisals open the door into vulnerability, while Campbell demonstrates how powerful it can be to use the bodily felt sense to access emotion. Any therapist who wishes to help clients gain deeper access to their emotional experience will find some gems here.”

—Dimitrij Samoilow, ICEEFT-certified EFT-trainer, clinical psychologist, Oslo, Norway.

“Discussion of sexual issues, addictions and grief can be intimidating for novice and seasoned counselors alike, but these videos clearly demonstrate how to talk about these dynamic and deeply personal challenges faced by our clients in the therapy room."

—Javier F. Casado Pérez, PhD, Community Counseling Clinic Director, Marriage, Couples, and Family Counseling Program Co-Coordinator, Portland State University

In Volume 1, Mark and Julie, already in couples therapy with EFT expert and trainer Lisa Palmer-Olsen, have a consultation session with EFT and sexual issues expert Jeff Hickey. They have grown distant from each other emotionally and sexually. Shared and individual frustrations along with stressors in and outside of their relationship have driven a deep wedge between them. Mark is tired of being Julie’s caretaker and struggles with deeply-buried feelings of rejection, frustration and mortality. A recovering addict who also struggles with her body image, Julie feels like she has failed both herself and Mark and may be the cause of the couple’s sexual problems. Tension, anger, disconnection and non-communication have taken the place of sexual intimacy, emotional sharing and security.

In Volume 2, on the heels of a promising session sex therapy session, Mark and Julie meet with Jeff Hickey and Michael Barnett to address the emotional aspects of their relationship, long neglected due to Julie’s history of physical pain, OCD and most significantly, addiction. Now that she is sober, Mark is finally expressing long-buried feelings of neglect and anger. The couple is now trying to mend and rebuild their frayed and fragile tie by focusing on their respective attachment issues.

In Volume 3, Cheyne and Chava struggle with pornography addiction. Cheyne’s addiction has robbed the couple of their intimacy and security. As a destructive form of infidelity, Cheyne’s addiction has also triggered Chava’s sexual trauma history, leaving her feeling even more vulnerable and abandoned. Their clinician, Ben Inouye reaches out to fellow EFT therapist Michael Barnett, an addictions specialist. Barnett’s sensitive and insightful intervention targets the couple’s fragile attachment bond, offering the promise of relational repair, re-connection and growth.

And finally, in Volume 4, four years after the tragic loss of their newborn son Hunter, Sean and Jenn are expecting a child. Despite this otherwise emotionally bonding experience, the couple has struggled to remain connected in the face of past and ongoing life stressors. Jenn’s desperate attempts to pull Sean back have left him feeling interrogated, and the couple is desperately locked in what EFT creator Sue Johnson calls the pursue/withdraw cycle. In this video they work with master EFT clinician Leanne Campbell in a last-ditch effort to reconnect and move forward on their family journey.
Watching and learning from these master clinicians will be a boon to your clinical practice with couples facing seemingly insurmountable relationship challenges.
