Art Therapy at a College Counseling Center

Sondra Geller, MA, ATR-BC, LPC, Jungian Analyst, shares her experiences from the mid 1980s as the first art therapist in the George Washington University Counseling Center with art therapy pioneer, Judith Rubin.
In a candid conversation between Sondra Geller, MA, ATR-BC, LPC, Jungian Analyst, and Judith Rubin, a pioneer in developing clinical credibility of art as therapy, Sandy shares some of her experiences in the mid 1980s as the first art therapist in the George Washington University Counseling Center. As a graduate student doing a second internship, Sandy established and developed an art therapy program to counsel students individually and in groups that continued for decades after she left. The film features excerpts from initial individual art therapy sessions of two seniors under stress of their upcoming graduation and making major life decisions. Witness Sandy's interviewing and reflective listening skills, art therapy prompts, and supportive methods for observing the artwork that assists these clients in reducing anxiety as they gain clarity and insights to manage their upcoming life changes. Sandy “believes that the potential for change is always present. The time spent deepening one's relationship to the Self is time well spent.”
